Rifaximin 550 mg is an antibiotic primarily used to treat certain gastrointestinal conditions. It is effective in treating travelers' diarrhea caused by non-invasive strains of E. coli, and it is also used for reducing the risk of hepatic encephalopathy recurrence, a condition linked to liver disease. Additionally, rifaximin is prescribed for irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D). It works by inhibiting bacterial RNA synthesis, thus reducing the bacterial population in the gut. Unlike many antibiotics, rifaximin is minimally absorbed into the bloodstream, concentrating its effects in the intestines, which helps in minimizing systemic side effects.
